What an Audio Interface Actually Does
An audio interface is a box that converts sound into numbers and numbers back into sound. That's the whole job. On the way in, it takes the analog signal from a microphone or guitar, amplifies it to a usable level with a preamp (a small amplifier designed for very quiet signals), and runs it through an analog-to-digital converter so your computer can record it. Interface spec sheets are long, and most of the numbers are noise. Here's what actually affects your day.
Preamp gain range
Gain is how much the preamp can amplify the incoming signal, measured in decibels (dB). This matters most if you plan to use a dynamic microphone — the rugged, less sensitive type — for a quiet source like soft vocals or spoken word. Dynamic mics output very little signal, and an entry-level preamp with a modest gain range can run out of headroom, forcing you to max the knob and accept a noisier recording. Two interfaces with identical hardware specs can behave very differently because of software. Good drivers give you low round-trip latency at small buffer sizes without crackles or dropouts. This is hard to read off a spec sheet; it shows up in user reports and in how long a manufacturer keeps shipping updates. It's also platform-dependent — Macs use a built-in audio system (Core Audio) that most class-compliant interfaces ride on smoothly, while Windows performance depends more on the manufacturer's own ASIO driver. Headphone output that can drive your headphones

A brief but non-negotiable note on levels: loud monitoring damages hearing, and the damage is cumulative and permanent. Tracking sessions run long, and "a bit louder" creeps. - Sample rates above 48 kHz. Interfaces advertise 192 kHz support the way cars advertise top speed. Music production happens at 44.1 or 48 kHz, and the audible case for recording higher is somewhere between contested and negligible. Every interface on sale comfortably exceeds what you need.
- Converter quality differences. Twenty years ago, cheap converters were an audible weak link. Interfaces are one of the safest categories of used gear. No moving parts beyond knobs and jacks, no consumables, and the technology plateaued for entry-level purposes years ago. A clean used interface from a known brand is often the best value in the entire home studio.
Two checks before you buy used:
- Driver support. Confirm the manufacturer still publishes drivers for your current operating system. An orphaned interface with abandoned drivers is a paperweight on Windows and a gamble on macOS. This is the single reason old professional interfaces sell cheap.
- Physical condition of the jacks. Wiggle a plug in each input. Crackling or intermittent contact means worn jacks — repairable, but factor it in.

- Buy the cheapest reputable option that passes all four checks, new or used, and stop thinking about it.
