Should you record in mono or stereo?
Record in mono when one microphone, one guitar cable, or one output carries one signal. Record in stereo only when the source produces two meaningfully different left and right channels, such as a stereo keyboard patch, stereo effects unit, two-microphone array, or full mixer output. A mono track already plays through both speakers. Selecting a stereo input for one mono source usually creates wasted space, a silent side, or two identical channels rather than useful width.
The decision is made at the input, not by whether the final mix will be stereo.
Mono and stereo describe channels, not quality
A mono recording contains one channel. A stereo recording contains two channels intended as a left-right pair. Neither format is inherently more professional.
A lead vocal captured by one microphone is mono because the interface receives one changing voltage stream. In a stereo mix, the DAW can send that mono track to the center, left, right, or anywhere between. Apple documents the distinction directly in its Logic Pro pan controls: a mono channel uses a pan control, while a stereo channel's balance control changes the relative levels of its existing left and right signals.
A stereo piano patch may contain different information on the two sides: lower notes weighted left, higher notes right, room reflections, chorus, or other spatial processing. Collapsing that pair to one input can change the sound. The correct choice depends on what the source actually outputs.

When the hardware labels are unclear, read the manual. Input 1 and Input 2 are not automatically a stereo pair; they are two independent inputs until the source and DAW routing make them one.
Why one microphone should usually use a mono track
Suppose a microphone is plugged into interface input 1. If the DAW track is set to stereo inputs 1-2, the microphone may appear only on the left because input 2 has no signal. Some systems instead duplicate the mono input, which looks stereo but contains identical information.
Choose mono input 1. The waveform then occupies one channel, the level meter has one signal, and the pan control places it in the stereo mix.
Ableton's current mono/stereo conversion note says that choosing a mono input records mono samples, while other input choices record stereo samples. It also explains that mono becomes stereo for playback by sending the identical signal to left and right. Duplication does not create spatial information.
This applies to one vocal mic, one guitar DI, one bass DI, and one close mic on an amp. Record the source cleanly once. Build width later with arrangement, panning of separate performances, time-based effects, or a deliberate multi-microphone method.
When a stereo recording earns both channels
Stereo is justified when left and right differ in a way you want to preserve.
Stereo keyboards and sound modules
Connect the device's left output to one interface input and its right output to another. Create a stereo track using that exact input pair. Match the two interface gains if the source sends a line-level pair and the hardware requires manual gain.
Before committing, compare the patch in stereo and through a mono check. Some patches rely on wide chorus, ping-pong delay, or room samples; others lose little when using the device's L/Mono output. A busy arrangement may benefit from mono even when the source offers stereo.
Stereo effects
A reverb, delay, chorus, or amp processor may create independent sides. Record both only if the spatial effect is part of the performance or difficult to recreate. If flexibility matters more, record the dry mono source as well when the hardware and routing permit it.
Two-microphone arrays
Two microphones do not become stereo merely because there are two. Their placement and directional patterns must encode a stable spatial relationship.
Apple's Logic Pro stereo-miking guide describes three established arrangements:
- AB: spaced microphones can provide width but may produce cancellations when summed to mono.
- XY: two directional microphones angled symmetrically provide positional information and generally stronger mono compatibility.
- MS: a forward-facing mid microphone and side-facing bidirectional microphone are decoded into stereo; changing the side level adjusts width.
Do not copy universal distances or angles from a photograph. Follow the microphone patterns, source size, room, and manufacturer guidance. Monitor the result in stereo and mono before recording all takes.
Stereo track or two mono tracks?
Both can store the same two-channel performance, but they make different editing jobs easier.
Use one stereo track when:
- the pair should always start, stop, edit, and process together;
- the source is a finished stereo output;
- one left-right balance is the intended presentation;
- the DAW's stereo tools match the job.
Use two linked mono tracks when:
- each microphone needs separate gain, polarity, EQ, or repair;
- you may change the balance substantially;
- one channel might be muted or replaced;
- the pair must be inspected separately before grouping.
Name the channels at record time: Piano L and Piano R, or Acoustic XY Left and Acoustic XY Right. Do not name them Mic 1 and Mic 2 and expect memory to improve three weeks later.
Apple's Logic channel-format guide shows mono as one meter column and stereo as two independent columns. The labels and meters should agree with the cables.
Do not confuse double-tracking with stereo recording
Recording one guitar performance once and duplicating the file does not create stereo width. The two copies contain the same timing and tone. Panning them apart still reproduces the same signal on both sides unless one copy is altered, which can create phase or comb-filtering problems.
Recording the part twice creates two genuinely different performances. Small timing, pitch, articulation, and tone differences produce width when the takes are panned apart. That is double-tracking: two mono performances used in a stereo arrangement.
Likewise, a mono vocal sent to stereo reverb remains a mono source with a stereo effect return. The dry voice and spatial effect should not be confused when deciding how many input channels to record.
Run a five-step pre-record check
1. Trace the physical outputs
Count the source outputs that carry audio. One microphone cable is one channel. A keyboard's left and right jacks are two. Confirm whether a jack marked L/Mono sums the source when used alone.
2. Match the interface inputs
Connect each source output to the intended interface input. Use the correct input type and level specified by the equipment manuals. Do not connect a speaker-level output to an interface input unless the hardware explicitly supports it.
3. Match the DAW format
Choose mono input 1 for one signal, not stereo 1-2. Choose the stereo pair only when both sides are connected and meaningful. Apple tells Logic users to choose an input channel or stereo pair; Audacity's recording setup guidance similarly distinguishes one-channel mono from two-channel stereo.
4. Inspect the meters
A mono track should show one incoming channel. A stereo track should show meaningful activity on both sides. If one side is silent, stop and correct the routing. If both sides move identically, confirm whether the source is genuinely stereo or merely duplicated.
5. Record and audition ten seconds
Play the full dynamic range. Listen through both speakers, then each side separately, then in mono. Verify the file begins cleanly, contains the intended source, and does not clip. Ten seconds of checking is cheaper than repeating a complete performance.
Check mono compatibility without misunderstanding it
A stereo mix may be heard through a phone speaker, smart speaker, club system, broadcast chain, accessibility setting, or other path that combines channels. A mono check reveals what survives when left and right are summed.
Listen for:
- a major level drop;
- a thin or hollow tone;
- a stereo effect disappearing;
- a central source becoming too loud;
- one channel containing information missing from the other.
Audacity's current stereo-to-mono documentation describes its specific command as combining left and right equally and attenuating the result by 6 dB to avoid clipping. Other DAWs may use different pan laws or monitoring behavior, so a level change alone is not proof of phase cancellation. Compare tone, balance, and intelligibility as well as loudness.
If a two-mic recording becomes hollow in mono, move the microphones or choose a more mono-compatible technique. Do not fix a placement problem by blindly flipping polarity and assuming the result is universally correct. Inspect both the stereo image and the sum.
Fix the common routing mistakes
Signal only on the left
The usual cause is a mono source recorded onto stereo inputs 1-2. Select mono input 1 and record again. For an existing file, split or extract the active channel using the DAW's documented command rather than normalizing a silent second channel.
Two identical channels
The hardware or software duplicated a mono source. Convert or record as mono. There is no spatial benefit in storing the same samples twice.
Stereo keyboard sounds narrow
Check that both output cables are connected, both inputs are selected as a pair, and neither channel is muted. Confirm the patch itself is stereo. Then inspect any balance control and test a different cable or input one variable at a time.
The center disappears in mono
Look for polarity inversion, wide delay or chorus, spaced microphones, and stereo-widening tools. Bypass processors one at a time, then check the raw pair. Do not alter the master until you identify which track creates the cancellation.
The stereo file is twice as large
Two channels require roughly twice the sample storage of one channel at the same sample rate, bit depth, and duration. That is worthwhile for real stereo information, not for a duplicated mono source.
A practical source-by-source default
Start vocals, spoken word, single-mic instruments, DI guitar, DI bass, and single amp microphones in mono. Start deliberate stereo arrays, stereo keyboard patches, stereo hardware effects, and complete stereo program feeds in stereo. Record drums and ensembles as multiple mono inputs unless a device supplies a finished stereo pair; group and route them later.
The final mix can still be stereo. Mono tracks gain positions and stereo effects inside it. The format of one recorded source and the format of the finished program are separate decisions.
The rule is simple enough to keep beside the interface: one meaningful input, mono track; two meaningfully different inputs intended as a pair, stereo track. Confirm with the meters, then record ten seconds before the take matters.
