Load a level-matched reference track

Run these in order. The sequence matters: it moves from big-picture to detail, which stops you from polishing a hi-hat while the whole low end is wrong.

Minutes 0–2: Full-song pass, hands off

Play the song top to bottom at your set level. Do not touch anything. No solo buttons, no fader rides, no pausing. You're listening the way a listener does: passively, for the overall impression.

Note — on paper, not in the DAW — anything that pulls your attention for the wrong reason. A word you can't make out. A section that drops in energy. A cymbal that stabs. If nothing jumps out, that's a pass. Resist the urge to hunt for problems; this check only catches things that announce themselves.

Minutes 2–4: Reference comparison

A/B your mix against the level-matched reference. Switch between them mid-song, without pausing, and ask three narrow questions:

"Noticeably" is the key word. Your mix will not sound identical to a mastered commercial release, and it shouldn't — mastering adds loudness and polish. You're checking for category errors, not shades of difference. Anything within shouting distance passes.

Minutes 4–6: The low end

Low frequencies are where small rooms lie the most, so this check leans on tools rather than trust.

A high-pass filter — an EQ that removes everything below a chosen frequency — on non-bass instruments is the usual fix for mud here, but don't reach for it yet. Note the problem and keep moving.

Minutes 6–8: The lead vocal

Play verse one, a chorus, and the final chorus, and check one thing only: can you understand every word without effort, at your moderate listening level? Not "can you hear the vocal" — can you understand it.

Intelligibility is the single most common failure point in home mixes, partly because the person mixing already knows the lyrics and their brain fills in the gaps. If you can, grab someone who's never heard the song and ask them to repeat a line back. Failing that, listen to just the consonants — if the t's, s's, and k's are audible, the words usually are.

Minutes 8–10: Mono check

Sum the mix to mono — most DAWs have a mono switch on the master channel or a free utility plugin that does it. Minutes 10–12: The quiet listen

Turn the volume down — genuinely quiet, background-music quiet — and play the chorus and one verse.

At low levels, human hearing is less sensitive to the lowest and highest frequencies, so the midrange balance is exposed with nowhere to hide. Whatever still sounds balanced at a whisper is genuinely balanced.
