A 15-Minute Mixing Checklist for Finishing Songs

Why a Checklist Beats Another Hour of Tweaking
Most home mixes don't fail because of a missing plugin. They fail because the mixer never stops mixing. You nudge the vocal up, then the snare feels quiet, so you push that, and now the low end is muddy again — three hours later the mix is different but not better, and your ears are too tired to know which version was right.
A checklist breaks that loop. Instead of asking "what else could I improve?" — a question with no ending — you ask "does this mix pass eight specific tests?" That's a question you can answer in about 15 minutes, and when the answer is yes, you're done. Not perfect. Done. Finished songs teach you more than perfect sessions ever will.
This checklist assumes the actual mixing work is behind you: balances set, EQ and compression decisions made, effects in place. Before You Start the Clock
Three things make or break this process, and none of them are gear.
Rest your ears
Ear fatigue is real and it's physiological, not a lack of discipline. After a couple of hours of listening, your hearing genuinely changes — high frequencies dull, and your judgment of balance drifts. Running the checklist immediately after a long mixing session defeats its purpose. Take at least a 20–30 minute break first. Overnight is better.
Set one moderate monitoring level and stick to it
Pick a comfortable, conversational listening level — roughly the volume at which you could talk over the music without raising your voice — and leave the volume knob alone for the whole checklist, except for the two checks that explicitly change it.
Two reasons. First, consistency: loudness changes how we perceive tonal balance, so every level change resets your judgment. Second, safety: sustained listening at high volume causes permanent hearing damage, and the risk scales with both level and duration. Mainstream hearing-safety guidance treats extended exposure above roughly 85 dB — about the level of heavy city traffic — as hazardous over a working day. Mixing quieter isn't just safer; it's more accurate, because it's closer to how most people will actually hear the song.
Load a level-matched reference track
Have one commercial track in a similar style sitting in your session, level-matched to your mix — meaning you've turned the reference down until it's about as loud as your rough mix, since commercial releases are mastered much louder than an unmastered mix. Without level-matching, the louder track always sounds better, and the comparison tells you nothing. The 15-Minute Checklist
Run these in order. The sequence matters: it moves from big-picture to detail, which stops you from polishing a hi-hat while the whole low end is wrong.
Minutes 0–2: Full-song pass, hands off
Play the song top to bottom at your set level. Do not touch anything. No solo buttons, no fader rides, no pausing. You're listening the way a listener does: passively, for the overall impression.
Note — on paper, not in the DAW — anything that pulls your attention for the wrong reason. A word you can't make out. A section that drops in energy. A cymbal that stabs. If nothing jumps out, that's a pass. Resist the urge to hunt for problems; this check only catches things that announce themselves.
Minutes 2–4: Reference comparison
A/B your mix against the level-matched reference. Switch between them mid-song, without pausing, and ask three narrow questions:
- Is my low end noticeably bigger or smaller than the reference?
- Is my vocal noticeably louder or quieter, relative to the band?
- Is my mix noticeably duller or brighter overall?
"Noticeably" is the key word. Your mix will not sound identical to a mastered commercial release, and it shouldn't — mastering adds loudness and polish. You're checking for category errors, not shades of difference. Anything within shouting distance passes.
Minutes 4–6: The low end
Low frequencies are where small rooms lie the most, so this check leans on tools rather than trust.
- Play the busiest section and watch your meters. If the master level jumps hard when the kick and bass hit together, they may be stacking in the same frequency range.
- Check the kick/bass relationship. You should be able to hear both as separate events, not one indistinct thump.
- Listen on the smallest speaker you have — a phone or a cheap earbud. Can you still tell the bassline's notes apart? If the low end vanishes entirely on small speakers, you may be relying on frequencies most playback systems can't reproduce.
A high-pass filter — an EQ that removes everything below a chosen frequency — on non-bass instruments is the usual fix for mud here, but don't reach for it yet. Note the problem and keep moving.
Minutes 6–8: The lead vocal
Play verse one, a chorus, and the final chorus, and check one thing only: can you understand every word without effort, at your moderate listening level? Not "can you hear the vocal" — can you understand it.
Intelligibility is the single most common failure point in home mixes, partly because the person mixing already knows the lyrics and their brain fills in the gaps. If you can, grab someone who's never heard the song and ask them to repeat a line back. Failing that, listen to just the consonants — if the t's, s's, and k's are audible, the words usually are.
Instrumental track? Run the same check on whatever carries the melody.
Minutes 8–10: Mono check
Sum the mix to mono — most DAWs have a mono switch on the master channel or a free utility plugin that does it. Mono means both stereo channels combined into one signal, which is how a lot of real-world playback works: many phone speakers, small Bluetooth speakers, and anyone standing off to one side of a stereo pair.
Listen for two things:
- Elements that vanish or drop sharply in level. That's phase cancellation — when the left and right channels contain similar signals slightly offset in time, they can cancel each other when summed. Wide stereo effects and doubled parts are the usual suspects.
- Balance shifts. If the vocal suddenly feels buried in mono, your stereo image was doing load-bearing work it can't do everywhere.
The mix doesn't need to sound great in mono. It needs to survive.
Minutes 10–12: The quiet listen
Turn the volume down — genuinely quiet, background-music quiet — and play the chorus and one verse.
At low levels, human hearing is less sensitive to the lowest and highest frequencies, so the midrange balance is exposed with nowhere to hide. Whatever still sounds balanced at a whisper is genuinely balanced. Classic tells: a vocal that disappears (too quiet all along), a snare that's suddenly the loudest thing in the song (over-pushed), a mix that turns into formless mush (the midrange was never organized).
Return the volume to your set level when you're done. This is the only loudness excursion the checklist needs — you do not need a "crank it" pass, and your ears will thank you for skipping it.
Minutes 12–14: Top, tail, and transitions
Nobody scrutinizes the first and last five seconds during a mix session, and it shows. Check:
- The very start: count-ins, headphone bleed, chair creaks, a breath clipped in half.
- The very end: does the final reverb or cymbal tail ring out fully, or does the file cut it off? Is there a stray noise after the last note?
- Section transitions: listen to two seconds either side of each verse/chorus boundary for clicks, abrupt mutes, or edits that don't breathe.
- Automation: any fader move that lands audibly late or early.
These are 30-second fixes that separate finished-sounding songs from demos.
Minutes 14–15: Headroom and export sanity
Last, the technical once-over:
- No clipping on the master. The output meter should never hit the top. If it does, lower the individual faders or a trim on the master bus — don't just slap a limiter over the problem.
- Headroom if you're sending the mix to mastering — your own or someone else's. Headroom is the space between your loudest peak and the ceiling. How much you need is debated; a few dB of peak headroom and no heavy limiter on the mix bus is the common-sense consensus. If you're mastering it yourself as a separate step, the same logic applies.
- Export settings: render at your session's sample rate and bit depth in a lossless format (WAV or AIFF), not an MP3.

When a Check Fails: One Move, Then Re-Test
The checklist's power is that it ends. Failed checks can quietly reopen the whole mix if you let them, so hold two rules:
- Fix with the smallest move that works. A one-dB fader ride before a new compressor. A high-pass filter before a surgical EQ. Small moves are reversible and rarely break something else.
- Re-run only the checks your fix could affect. Turned the vocal up? Re-check the vocal, the reference A/B, and the quiet listen. The low end didn't change; leave it alone.
If a fix triggers a chain of other failures, stop. That's not a finishing problem — the mix has a structural issue, and the honest move is to go back to mixing, sleep on it, and run the checklist fresh tomorrow.
How to Know You're Actually Done
Done is not a feeling; feelings about your own mix are unreliable by minute 90. Done looks like this:
- Every check passes, or fails only in ways you've consciously decided to accept.
- Your last three changes were tiny, and you're not sure the mix got better.
- You've stopped fixing and started swapping — trading one acceptable option for another.
When you hit that state, export the mix and stop. If you can, apply the overnight rule: listen once the next day, on a different system, before calling it final. Fresh ears at 9 a.m. catch in one listen what tired ears missed for three hours. If the morning listen passes, it's finished — resist relitigating it.
One habit to build on top of all this: keep the notes you made during minute 0–2 pass after pass, song after song. The same failures will keep appearing — everyone has a signature mistake, usually a vocal buried out of self-consciousness or a low end inflated by a flattering room. Knowing yours turns the checklist from a safety net into a teacher.
A mix is finished when it passes the tests you set in advance — not when you run out of ideas for changing it.
