Pre-Delay: The Setting That Separates Amateur and Pro Reverb
Pre-delay is a short gap — typically 10 to 120 milliseconds — inserted between the dry sound and the onset of its reverb. It's the single most useful control on the panel, and the one beginners ignore.
Why it matters: when reverb starts the instant a word does, the reflections mask the transient and the consonants, and the vocal slides backward into the wash. Add 20–80 ms of pre-delay and the dry syllable lands first, clean and up front, with the reverb blooming just behind it. You get the space without losing the source. Big natural spaces work the same way — in a large hall, the first reflections genuinely arrive tens of milliseconds after the direct sound.
Practical starting points:
- Vocals: 30–80 ms. Longer pre-delay = vocal sits closer to the listener while still sounding produced.
- Drums/percussion: 0–20 ms. Too much pre-delay on a snare reads as a distinct slapback.
- Depth trick: to push a sound back, use less pre-delay and more send; to keep it forward but lush, use more pre-delay.
Some engineers sync pre-delay to the song's tempo (for example, a 16th-note value) so the reverb breathes with the groove. It's a nice refinement, not a requirement — trust your ears over the calculator.
Vocal Reverb Settings: A Starting Point That Works
Vocals are where most people meet reverb, so here is a concrete recipe. Set up a plate on an aux and start here:
- Type: plate (or a smooth hall for slow songs)
- Decay: 1.2–2.0 s for mid-tempo material; shorter for busy arrangements, longer for sparse ballads

- Too many different spaces. Six tracks with six different insert reverbs sound like six different rooms. Shared sends fix this by design.
A blunt but effective rescue move: put an EQ on the return and cut both extremes hard — high-pass at 300 Hz, low-pass at 6 kHz. A tempo-synced eighth-note delay tucked behind a vocal adds size and sustain, but because the repeats are copies of the vocal rather than a wash, the space between words stays clear. This is why many modern, upfront vocal productions lean on delay as the primary "space" and use only a whisper of reverb.
- Reverb sounds more like a place. When you want the listener to feel a room, a hall, a physical location, reverb is the honest tool. Delay never quite sounds like architecture.
- They combine beautifully. A common pro move: a slap or eighth-note delay carrying most of the audible space, plus a short plate at a low level for polish. Some engineers also feed the delay into the reverb so the repeats bloom instead of sitting bare.
If a vocal needs to feel big and stay intelligible in a busy chorus, try delay first. If a sparse ballad needs emotion and air, reverb first. Most finished records use both.
A 10-Minute Reverb Workflow
- Create two aux buses: short room, and plate/hall. Set both plugins to 100% wet.
- High-pass both returns around 250 Hz. Low-pass the plate around 8 kHz.
- Set the plate's pre-delay to ~40 ms, decay to ~1.6 s. Set the room's decay under 0.8 s.
- Send drums and guitars lightly to the room until they stop sounding pasted-on.
- Send the vocal to the plate; raise until obvious, back off to just-below-obvious.
- Play the loudest, busiest section. If it's washy, shorten decays and lower sends there first — verses can afford more wet than choruses.
- Mute all the returns for ten seconds, then unmute. That contrast tells you instantly whether the reverb is doing depth or doing damage.
