Reverb problems are almost never about how much reverb you used. They're about where it sits relative to the vocal. A big, lush reverb can sit politely behind a voice, and a tiny one can smear it into mud. The difference comes down to pre-delay, decay time, and EQ — all of which you control.
Why Vocals Get Washed Out in the First Place
When a vocal sounds washed out, one of three things is usually happening:
- The reverb starts at the same instant as the voice. With zero pre-delay, the reverb's early reflections pile on top of every consonant. The transients that make lyrics intelligible get smeared, so you turn the reverb down, and now it sounds dry again. Turn it up, get smear; turn it down, lose the space — that loop is where a lot of vocal reverb frustration lives.
- The decay is longer than the gaps in the performance. If the singer starts a new phrase before the last phrase's tail has died, tails stack up. Three or four overlapping tails read as "wash" even at a low level.
- The reverb has the same frequency content as the voice. A full-bandwidth reverb return carries low-mid mud and harsh top end. Both fight the dry vocal directly, so the reverb has to be quieter than it should be to stay out of the way.
Notice that "the reverb fader is too high" isn't on the list. Level is the last thing you should reach for, not the first.
Set It Up as a Send, Not an Insert

- You can process the reverb independently of the voice. Plenty of insert reverbs do offer wet-path high cut, low cut, and damping — but you're limited to whatever that one plugin exposes, and you can't shape the wet signal independently of the dry signal sharing the same channel.
- Other tracks can share the same space. Sending backing vocals or a guitar into the same reverb glues the arrangement into one room instead of five, and one reverb instance costs less CPU than six.
- You can control how much reverb a part gets separately from how loud that part is. Automating the send lets you push extra space into one quiet verse line, or pull the reverb back for a dense chorus, without moving the vocal itself.
One thing a send does not do is isolate the reverb from the rest of the vocal chain. Sends are post-fader by default, so fader moves and volume automation scale the feed to the reverb by the same amount — the reverb follows the voice and the wet/dry ratio stays constant, which is usually exactly what you want. And anything inserted before the send is baked into what the reverb hears: compress the vocal harder and the reverb gets a denser, more consistent feed.

Pre-delay is the gap, measured in milliseconds, between the dry sound and the moment the reverb begins. It exists because in a real room, direct sound reaches your ears before any reflection does — the reflections have farther to travel.
For vocals, pre-delay is the difference between reverb that swallows the voice and reverb that frames it. With enough pre-delay, each word's transient — the consonants, the attack — arrives clean, and the reverb blooms behind it. Your ear localizes the voice up front and hears the reverb as space around it, not fog on it.
Starting points:
- Ballads and slow songs: 80–120 ms. Long enough to fully separate voice from tail; the gap reads as intimacy plus space.
- Mid-tempo pop and rock: 40–80 ms. Enough separation without the reverb feeling detached.
- Dense, fast material: 20–40 ms, often with a shorter reverb overall.
A useful trick is to set pre-delay to the tempo: a 16th note at 120 BPM is 125 ms, a 32nd note is 62.5 ms. (The math: 60,000 ÷ BPM = one beat in ms, then divide down.) EQ the return: carve the reverb, not the voice
High-pass the reverb return around 200–400 Hz so the tail isn't adding low-mid mud under the vocal, and low-pass it somewhere between 5 and 10 kHz so it isn't hissing over the vocal's air and consonants. A darker, band-limited reverb can sit noticeably louder than a full-bandwidth one before it reads as wash. This is the same cut-first logic that governs subtractive EQ everywhere else in a mix: remove what's fighting, and you rarely need to boost or push levels.
If the reverb still pokes out on loud phrases, put a compressor on the return, keyed (sidechained) from the dry vocal. The reverb ducks while the singer sings and blooms in the gaps — audible space with very little smear on the words. How Much Reverb on Vocals Is the Right Amount?
There is no universal percentage, but there is a reliable method:
- Set the level in context, never in solo. Reverb that sounds right on a soloed vocal is almost always too much in the full mix; reverb that sounds right in the mix usually sounds too dry in solo. Trust the mix.
- Raise the return until you clearly hear it, then back it off until you only miss it when it's gone. The mute-toggle test settles it: with the return unmuted, the vocal should sound dimensional, but you still shouldn't be able to point at the reverb as a separate event; with the return muted, the vocal should collapse to something noticeably drier and flatter. If muting changes nothing, the reverb is too low. If unmuting makes you notice "reverb" rather than "space," it's too high.

If your vocals sound pasted on top of the track no matter what you do, the usual causes are: reverb level so low it's inaudible (fix: use pre-delay and EQ so you can afford more), a reverb too dark or short to register as space (fix: lengthen decay slightly or open the low-pass), or no early-reflection glue at all (fix: add a second, very short room reverb — 0.3–0.6 s, low level — underneath the main one).
