What an Untreated Room Actually Does to Your Recording
Every room adds two things to a recording: reflections and noise. Reflections are copies of the sound bouncing off walls, ceiling, floor, and furniture, arriving at the microphone a few milliseconds after the direct sound. Your ears mostly tune them out in daily life. A microphone doesn't. It captures the direct sound and the reflections mixed together, and that mixture is what people mean by "room sound."
Two specific problems come from this:
- Audible room tone. The smeared, slightly boxy echo you hear on bedroom vocal recordings. It reads instantly as "home recorded" because listeners have heard thousands of professionally recorded voices with dry, controlled ambience, and the difference is obvious even to people who can't name it.
- Comb filtering. When a reflection arrives a few milliseconds late, it combines with the direct sound and cancels some frequencies while reinforcing others. The result is a hollow, phasey coloration. You can't EQ it out later, because it isn't a simple frequency bump — it's dozens of narrow cancellations spread across the spectrum.
Here's the part that matters: reflections baked into a recording cannot be cleanly removed afterward. De-reverb plugins exist and have improved, but they trade room sound for artifacts — a slightly underwater, processed quality. Every hour spent on damage control before you press record is worth more than any plugin you'll reach for after.
The good news is that damage control works better than most people expect. You don't need a treated room to make a dry, professional-sounding vocal recording. You need to control the two feet of air around the microphone.
The Three Levers You Actually Have
Everything in this article is a variation on three moves. In order of cost — all three are free or nearly free:
- Reduce the distance between source and mic. Direct sound gets louder as you move closer; the room's reflections stay roughly the same level. Halving the distance to the mic raises the direct signal substantially while the room wash doesn't change, so the ratio of voice to room improves dramatically. This is the single most powerful tool you have.
- Aim the mic's rejection at the room. Most vocal mics are cardioid — a pickup pattern shaped like a heart that hears what's in front of it and rejects what's behind it. Point the dead side of the mic at your worst reflective surface (usually the wall or window behind you as you sing... more on that in a moment).
- Put absorption where reflections come from. Soft, thick, porous material — duvets, moving blankets, a mattress, a closet full of hanging clothes — kills mid and high frequency reflections before they reach the mic.
Distance changes come first because they're free and instant. Notice what's not on the list: buying anything.
Where to Stand in the Room
Before hanging a single blanket, position yourself correctly. Most of a recording's room sound is decided by where the source and mic sit.
- Stay out of corners. Bass energy piles up where walls meet. Recording near a corner adds boom you'll fight in the mix.
- Avoid the exact center of the room too. Small rooms have resonant frequencies (room modes) with peaks and dips at predictable spots; the center is usually one of them. Somewhere around a third of the way into the room is generally safer than dead center or against a wall.
- Don't sing facing a bare parallel wall. Your voice hits the wall behind the mic, bounces straight back into the mic's live side. Angle yourself so no untreated flat surface directly faces the front of the mic.
- Sing across the long dimension of the room if it has one. Reflections travel farther, arrive later and quieter.
- Think about what's behind you. A cardioid mic rejects sound from its rear — but it's aimed straight at whatever is behind the singer. The wall behind you is the one the mic hears best. That's where your first blanket goes.

The Closet Vocal Booth: When It Works and When It Backfires
The closet vocal booth is real, but only under specific conditions.
It works when the closet is packed with hanging clothes. Dense fabric on three sides is genuinely effective broadband absorption for the mid and high frequencies that make a vocal sound "roomy." A full clothes closet is one of the best free recording spaces in most homes.
It backfires when the closet is small and mostly empty. Hard drywall surfaces inches from your head create fast, strong reflections — exactly the comb-filtering scenario described earlier — plus a congested low-mid buildup from singing into a tiny sealed box. An empty closet usually sounds worse than the open room. Small spaces don't absorb sound; soft materials do.
Practical closet checklist:
- Clothes on at least the back wall and one side; add a blanket over any bare wall.
- Put a folded blanket or pillow on the shelf above your head — the ceiling reflection is close and nasty in a closet.
- Something soft underfoot if the floor is hard.
- Face the clothes, not the open door. The open door behind you is fine — it lets some energy escape instead of bouncing back.
- Watch for noise: closets often share walls with HVAC runs or water pipes. Record ten seconds of silence and listen back on headphones before committing to a take.
If your closet fails these tests, skip it. A well-set-up corner of the open room beats a bad closet.
Building a Temporary Booth in the Open Room
No usable closet? Build absorption where it counts. The priority order, based on which reflections a cardioid mic hears loudest:
- Behind the singer (the mic's live side points here) — a duvet or two moving blankets hung on a rail, a door frame, or a couple of mic stands.
- Behind and beside the mic — reduces early side reflections. This is where a mattress leaned against the wall earns its keep.
- Above, if the ceiling is low — a blanket over a horizontal boom, or simply record standing in the highest part of the room.
- Under the mic — a rug or folded blanket on a hard floor.
Thickness matters more than coverage area. A doubled-over duvet absorbs meaningfully lower frequencies than a thin sheet, which does close to nothing. One thick layer behind you beats four thin layers scattered around the room. Leave an air gap of a few inches between blanket and wall where you can — it extends absorption lower in frequency for free.
Don't try to seal yourself into a fully enclosed blanket fort. You need three soft-ish sides and an escape path for sound; a tiny sealed pocket recreates the empty-closet problem and gets stuffy fast.
This is deliberately temporary rigging. If you record regularly, the same principles scale up into permanent panels — the priorities and placement logic carry straight over to acoustic treatment that fits a normal budget.
Mic Choice and Technique for Bad Rooms
You may already own the right mic for an untreated room, because in untreated rooms, less sensitive is often better.
A dynamic mic (the rugged type used on stage) picks up less low-level ambience than a typical large-diaphragm condenser (the sensitive studio type that captures fine detail — including the detail of your refrigerator and the room's echo). Plenty of professional vocals have been cut on stage-style dynamics precisely because they let you work close and hear less room. If you own both, try the dynamic first in a bad room; the "worse" mic frequently wins.
Technique adjustments:
- Work close: roughly 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) with a pop filter, rather than the 8–12 inches you might use in a treated space. Closer means more proximity effect — the bass boost cardioid mics add as you approach them — so expect to cut a little low end with EQ later. A slightly bassy, dry vocal is an easy fix; a roomy vocal is not.
- Sing slightly off-axis if plosives ("p" and "b" pops) become a problem at close range.
- Turn down the gain to match the hotter close signal, and monitor on closed-back headphones so the mic doesn't pick up your playback. Keep headphone levels moderate — you'll be doing many takes, and sustained loud monitoring genuinely damages hearing over time. If you can't hear someone talking near you, it's too loud.
- Kill noise sources: fans, HVAC, fridge in an adjacent room, phone, hard drive. Noise is the other half of room sound, and it's fully preventable.

What about reflection filters?
The curved foam shields that clamp behind the mic are the most-purchased "untreated room" product, and the evidence on them is honestly mixed. They absorb some sound approaching the mic's rear — but a cardioid mic already rejects its rear, and the reflections it hears loudest come from behind the singer, where the filter does nothing. Measured tests and user experience both range from "modest improvement" to "no audible difference," and a few users report added coloration. A duvet behind the singer costs nothing and addresses the actual problem. If you already own a reflection filter, use it as one absorber among several, not as the fix.

Beyond Vocals: The Same Logic, Applied
- Electric guitar and bass: skip the room entirely. Record direct into your interface (DI — plugging the instrument straight in) and use amp simulation. Zero room sound, by definition.
- Acoustic guitar: close-mic it — around 6–12 inches, aimed near the twelfth fret rather than at the boomy soundhole — and apply the same absorption priorities. Acoustic guitar tolerates a little room better than vocals do.
- Anything loud (amps, drums): loud sources excite the whole room and are the hardest case for damage control. Close-mic aggressively, pad the immediate area, and accept that some room will remain — or go the DI/sample route for the cleanest result.
- Spoken word and voice-over: everything here applies, but even more strictly, since narration is exposed with no music to mask room tone. The closet booth earns its keep most for VO work.
What to Do in the Mix (and What Not to Expect)
If some room got through anyway:
- Edit silences. Trim or gate the gaps between phrases so the room tail doesn't sit exposed between lines. This alone makes a roomy vocal noticeably tighter.
- High-pass filter below the voice's useful range to remove rumble and some room boom.
- De-reverb processing as a last resort. Modern tools can genuinely reduce baked-in room sound, but push them hard and the vocal turns artificial. Use the mildest setting that helps.
None of these substitutes for getting it right at the mic. Treat mix-stage cleanup as a 20% improvement tool, not a rescue.
