Why Voice-Over Flips the Usual Home Studio Rules
Music recording is forgiving in ways people don't appreciate until they try voice-over. A slightly boxy vocal tone hides under guitars and drums. A faint air-conditioner hum vanishes the moment the band comes in. Reverb from an untreated bedroom can even pass as "vibe."
Voice-over has none of those escape hatches. It's one dry voice, played back at full level, often through earbuds pressed directly against a listener's eardrums, with nothing else in the signal to mask problems. Every click of the tongue, every hum from the computer fan, every slap of sound bouncing off a bare wall is right there in the foreground.
That changes the priority order. For music, the usual advice is: learn technique first, buy a decent interface and mic, treat the room when you can. For voice-over, the room is the studio. A modest microphone in a genuinely quiet, dead space will beat an expensive one in a lively room every single time — and clients can hear the difference within the first five seconds of an audition.

If you've already built a music-oriented setup, most of it carries over. What changes is where the next hour and the next dollar should go.
The Room Comes First
Noise floor: the problem you stop hearing
Noise floor is the constant background level your setup records when you're silent — the sum of room noise (HVAC, refrigerator through the wall, traffic, computer fans) and electronic noise from your gear. Your brain filters steady noise out after a few minutes, which is exactly why it's dangerous: you stop hearing it, but the recording doesn't.
Test it before you buy anything. Record 30 seconds of "silence" in your intended space at your normal recording gain, then turn the playback up and listen. Better, look at the meter in your recording software: levels there are shown in dBFS (decibels relative to full scale, where 0 is the loudest the digital system can capture, and everything real sits at negative numbers). A silent passage hovering at −70 dBFS or lower is a good sign. If it's sitting at −45, you have work to do, and no microphone purchase will fix it.
The fixes are mostly free or cheap, and mostly boring:
- Record when the building is quiet. Early morning and late night are free acoustic treatment.
- Turn things off. HVAC during takes, refrigerator (with a reminder to turn it back on), noisy PC fans. Getting the computer out of the room — or a long USB cable and the laptop in the hallway — is one of the biggest single wins.
- Move away from noise, and point the mic away from it. Most voice-over mics reject sound from the rear; aim that rejection at the noise source.
- Seal the obvious gaps. A door sweep and weatherstripping do more for outside noise than any foam panel, because foam does almost nothing to block sound — it only absorbs reflections inside the room.
That last distinction — soundproofing (blocking sound getting in, which requires mass and sealing) versus acoustic treatment (absorbing reflections inside, which requires soft material) — is the most misunderstood thing in this field. Foam will not stop your neighbor's lawnmower. Nothing cheap will. Scheduling around noise is the honest budget answer.
Reflections: voice-over rooms should be dead
Music rooms are treated to sound controlled. Voice-over rooms are treated to sound dead — as close to no audible room reflection as you can manage. That "small room" sound clients complain about is early reflections: your voice bouncing off nearby hard surfaces and arriving at the mic a few milliseconds late, smearing the tone.
You don't need to treat a whole room to fix this for one seated or standing person. You need to kill reflections in the immediate area around the mic — behind you, beside you, and above the mic position, since your voice projects forward and bounces back off whatever's in front of you. Thick moving blankets on stands, a heavily loaded clothes rack, dense towels — anything soft and thick works. The closet booth, honestly assessed
The classic advice — record in a closet full of hanging clothes — works, with caveats. The clothes are excellent broadband absorption, and the small space keeps reflections short and easy to kill. The caveats: a small untreated closet with bare walls is a resonant box and sounds terrible, so the clothes are the point, not the closet. Ventilation is nonexistent, so takes get sweaty and mouth noise gets worse as you dry out. And if the closet shares a wall with the noisy side of the house, you've moved closer to the problem.
A blanket-lined corner of a quiet room is often a better long-term setup than a cramped closet. Try both with the 30-second silence test and a short read; your ears and meter will settle it.
The Signal Chain: Simpler Than You Think
The microphone question
Voice-over forums will tell you that you need a large-diaphragm condenser — a sensitive mic type that captures lots of detail — and that is genuinely the sound of most commercial voice-over. But sensitivity cuts both ways: a condenser captures your room and your noise floor in equal detail. In an untreated space, it faithfully documents everything wrong with it.
A dynamic microphone — the less sensitive, more rugged type used on stage and in broadcast — picks up far less room sound and background noise at working distance. That's why broadcast studios have used dynamics for decades, and why they're the pragmatic choice for imperfect home spaces. The trade-off is that dynamics need considerably more gain from your interface's preamp, and some budget interfaces get audibly hissy near the top of their gain range. If your interface struggles, an inline gain booster (a small passive preamp that sits between mic and interface) is a category of accessory that solves it cheaply.
The honest summary: condenser if your space is quiet and dead, dynamic if it isn't yet. Since most people's spaces aren't yet, and since a good dynamic remains useful forever, that's the sequencing we'd suggest — and it's consistent with the broader reasoning in which mic to buy first. What you should not do is buy a second mic to fix a room problem. That upgrade money is blankets and a door sweep.
One more category note: USB mics are legitimate for getting started and for auditioning from hotel rooms. Their limits show up later — less flexibility, no upgrade path, sometimes higher self-noise. An entry-level 2-input interface plus an XLR mic (the standard analog mic connection) is the more durable buy if you're at all serious.
Interface, stand, and the unglamorous essentials
Any current entry-level interface with one clean mic preamp is enough for voice-over. You are recording one voice; channel count, fancy metering, and premium converters are music-studio concerns. Spend the difference on:
- A boom arm or solid stand. Desk-mounted mics pick up keyboard thumps and desk resonance. A boom arm with a shock mount (an elastic cradle that isolates the mic from vibration) fixes both.
- A pop filter. Plosives — the burst of air on "p" and "b" sounds — overload the mic capsule with a low-frequency thump. A mesh screen a few centimeters in front of the mic stops most of them for very little money.
- A copy stand or tablet for scripts. Paper rustle ruins takes. Silent page turns matter more than most gear.
Technique: Where "Professional" Actually Lives
Distance, angle, and consistency
Work closer than music vocalists do — typically a hand-span or less, adjusted by ear. Closer positioning raises your voice relative to the room and noise floor, which is exactly what voice-over wants. It also invokes the proximity effect: most directional mics add low-end warmth as you get closer. A little is the "broadcast" sound; too much is mud. Find the distance where your voice sounds full but words stay clear, then mark it — a taped mark on the floor, a fist-and-thumb measurement, anything repeatable.
Speaking slightly off-axis — aimed just past the mic rather than dead into it — softens plosives and harsh sibilance ("s" sounds) with zero processing. Small angle, big difference.
Consistency across sessions is a voice-over-specific discipline, because clients come back for pickups — replacement lines recorded days or weeks later that must splice invisibly into the original. Same mic, same distance, same room position, same time of day if you can manage it. Take a photo of your setup. Record 30 seconds of room tone (your space's ambient sound, used to patch edits) at every session.
The mouth is part of the signal chain
Clicks, dry-mouth smacks, and gurgles are the most common complaint about home voice-over files after noise floor. Hydrate for hours before the session, not minutes. Room-temperature water at the stand; avoid dairy and coffee right before reading. Every remaining click gets edited out by hand — editing is half of this job, and there's no way around that.
Levels, Specs, and Delivery
Record in 24-bit, and set gain so your loudest phrases peak somewhere around −12 to −6 dBFS. That leaves headroom — space below the digital ceiling — so an enthusiastic line doesn't clip into distortion. Quiet-looking waveforms are fine; you can raise level later, but you can't un-clip a take.
Voice-over is also unusual in that some clients hand you hard numbers. Audiobook platform ACX publishes the best-known example: peaks no higher than −3 dB, average (RMS) level between −23 and −18 dB, and a noise floor at −60 dB RMS or below. Even if you never record an audiobook, that noise-floor figure is a useful benchmark for what "quiet enough" means commercially — and notice that it's a spec about your room, not your mic.
Processing should be light and boring: a high-pass filter (cutting inaudible low rumble below the voice), gentle compression to even out level, a de-esser if sibilance needs taming, and careful manual editing of breaths and clicks. Noise reduction software keeps improving and opinions on it genuinely vary, but everyone agrees on the ranking: a quiet room first, software cleanup a distant second, because aggressive reduction leaves watery artifacts that read as "home recorded."
Monitor and edit at moderate volume on closed-back headphones. Editing sessions run long, and sustained loud listening damages hearing permanently — hearing-safety guidance generally puts extended exposure limits around ordinary conversation-plus levels, so if you need to raise your voice to talk over your headphones, turn them down. Loud also lies: it makes everything sound better than it is.
