A USB mic bundles the microphone, preamp, and analog-to-digital converter into one body that plugs straight into a computer. For podcasting, streaming, meetings, and quick demos, they're legitimately good and refreshingly simple.
For music production, the limitations show up on schedule:
- You can't upgrade around them. With an XLR mic (the standard three-pin analog connection) and an interface, every piece can be improved independently. A USB mic is a closed box.
- One at a time. Recording two USB mics into one computer ranges from awkward to impossible depending on your software. Guitar-and-vocal recordists hit this wall fast.
