Why Placement Beats Everything Else
An acoustic guitar doesn't make sound from one spot. The top vibrates like a speaker cone, the soundhole breathes air in and out, and the strings ring along the entire neck. Each of those zones has a different tonal character, which means moving a microphone four inches can change the recorded sound more than swapping to a mic that costs ten times as much.
That's the whole premise of this guide: placement first, gear last. Two people with identical equipment routinely get wildly different acoustic recordings, and the difference is almost always where the mic is pointed, how far away it sits, and what the room is doing around it.

Before You Place a Mic: Room, Instrument, Player
Three things shape the recording before any electronics get involved. Skipping them is why so many home acoustic tracks sound boxy or brittle no matter what happens at mixdown.
The room
Acoustic guitar is quiet compared with a singer or an amplifier, so you'll run more preamp gain — and more gain means the mic hears more of your room. In a small untreated space with bare parallel walls, that shows up as a hollow, ringing quality that no plugin removes cleanly afterward.
You don't need acoustic panels to get a usable sound. You need a few practical decisions:
- Record in the largest, most furnished room available. Sofas, bookshelves, curtains, and rugs all break up reflections.
- Sit a few feet away from walls and well out of corners, where low frequencies pile up.
- Don't aim the mic's "back" at a bare wall or window right behind you — reflections bounce straight back into it.
- Clap once where you plan to sit. A fast metallic ring after the clap is flutter echo (sound bouncing rapidly between two hard parallel surfaces). Move, or hang a blanket on one of the offending walls.
A slightly live room can actually flatter acoustic guitar — completely dead spaces make it sound small. The enemy isn't reflection itself; it's small-room boxiness and flutter.
The instrument
- Strings. Dead, months-old strings record dull, and no EQ (equalization — tone shaping by frequency) convincingly restores the missing top end. Brand-new strings can be over-bright for the first hour of playing. Strings with a day or two on them are a comfortable middle.
- Tuning. Tune before every take, not every session. Recorded tuning drift is far more obvious than live drift, especially on layered parts.
- Setup and buzz. Fret buzz you barely notice in the room becomes glaring on a close mic. If the guitar buzzes, fix that before recording day.
- Pick choice. Thin picks emphasize click and slap; heavier picks give a rounder attack. This is a legitimate tone control — try two or three.
The player
The mic hears everything: squeaky chairs, tapping feet, jacket zippers, a wristwatch against the lower bout. Wear soft clothes, use a silent chair, and decide up front whether foot-tapping is part of the performance or a problem.
Consistency matters too. If you shift position between takes, the tone shifts with you, and edits between takes stop matching. Get comfortable, then stay put.
The Starting Position: 12th Fret, About a Handspan Away
Here is the placement that works for most guitars, rooms, and songs, and the one nearly every engineer starts from:
Aim a cardioid microphone at the point where the neck joins the body — roughly the 12th to 14th fret — from about 6 to 12 inches away, angled slightly toward the soundhole.
Cardioid means a directional pickup pattern: the mic hears mostly what's directly in front of it and rejects sound from behind. That directionality is what lets you choose which part of the guitar dominates.
The neck-join position works because it's a balance point. It captures string articulation and detail from the neck side while catching enough body resonance from the lower half of the guitar to sound full — without parking the mic in front of the instrument's bass cannon.
Why not the soundhole
Pointing a mic straight into the soundhole is the single most common beginner mistake, and it's an understandable one — it looks like where the sound comes out.
The soundhole is a resonating port, like the port on a bass reflex speaker. The air inside the body resonates strongly at a low frequency, and directly in front of the hole that resonance overwhelms everything else. The result is a boomy, congested recording with a huge hump in the low mids that fights the bass and kick in a mix. You can carve at it with EQ, but you're fighting the placement instead of fixing it — and the cure is free: move the mic.
Fine-tuning by ear
From the 12th-fret starting point, small moves are your tone controls:
- Slide toward the bridge: warmer, woodier, more body — and eventually boomy as you approach the soundhole's influence.
- Slide toward the headstock: brighter and more articulate, then thin and clacky if you go too far.
- Move closer: drier, more detailed, and bassier. Directional mics boost low frequencies as they get very close to a source — the proximity effect — so inside about six inches the sound thickens noticeably.
- Move farther away: more room sound and "air," a more natural overall picture, but also more of whatever your room does badly.
The reliable method: record 20 seconds of the actual part at three or four positions, label each take, and compare on headphones. Your ears at the mic position lie to you; the recordings don't.
Which Mic? It Matters Less Than You've Been Told
The honest answer on mic choice for acoustic guitar:
- Small-diaphragm condensers are the traditional first choice. Condensers are the more sensitive mic type, and small-diaphragm models track fast transients — the pick attack — with the least smearing. If a studio records acoustic guitar daily, this is usually what's on the stand.
- Large-diaphragm condensers — the classic "vocal mic" shape — work fine and tend to sound a touch fuller and smoother. If you own one mic and it's this, use it happily.
- Dynamic mics (the rugged, less sensitive type used on drums and guitar amps) are workable. They need more preamp gain and capture less high-frequency detail, but in a bad-sounding room their reduced sensitivity to room reflections can actually be an advantage.

None of these is "correct." They're starting points, and the right one depends on the guitar, the part, and what else is in the arrangement.
Mono or Stereo?
Default to mono. If the acoustic guitar sits in a mix with vocals, bass, and drums, one well-placed mic is easier to record, easier to mix, and impossible to get phase-wrong. Stereo earns its complexity when the guitar is the centerpiece — solo fingerstyle pieces, sparse singer-songwriter arrangements — and the width is part of the production.
If you do go stereo, two arrangements cover almost everything:
- XY (coincident pair): two cardioid mics with their capsules nearly touching, angled about 90 degrees apart, aimed at the 12th fret area. Because both capsules occupy essentially the same point in space, sound arrives at both simultaneously — which makes XY immune to the phase problems below. It's the safe stereo choice.
- Spaced pair: one mic at the 12th fret, one near the bridge or lower bout, both 8–12 inches out. Wider and more dramatic than XY, but now the two mics sit at different distances from each source of sound, and that's where phase trouble lives.
Phase, in one paragraph
When two mics capture the same source from different distances, the sound arrives at each mic at slightly different times. Summed together, some frequencies reinforce and others cancel — comb filtering — which can make the combined sound thin, hollow, or oddly swirly. Two defenses: follow the 3:1 rule (make the distance between the two mics at least three times each mic's distance from the guitar), and always check the pair summed to mono in your DAW. If the guitar gets thin or small in mono, flip the polarity switch on one channel or move a mic a few inches and listen again. If mono sounds fine, you're safe everywhere.
Levels and Monitoring
Record at 24-bit and aim for peaks around -12 to -6 dBFS (decibels relative to full scale — the digital maximum) on the loudest strums. That looks timid on the meter, and that's correct. At 24-bit resolution the noise floor is far below anything your room contributes, so there is no benefit to recording hot — only the risk of a hard, ugly digital clip on an enthusiastic strum. Acoustic guitar is one of the most dynamic sources you'll record; leave it headroom.
Monitor through closed-back headphones while tracking, never speakers — the mic will pick up speaker bleed. Set a click track (metronome) level where it's audible but not leaking from the headphones into the mic; click bleed on a quiet fingerpicked intro is a classic and unfixable mistake.
One safety note worth taking seriously: it's tempting to push headphone volume up while chasing detail through long sessions. Sustained loud monitoring genuinely damages hearing, and hearing loss is permanent. Keep levels moderate — if you can't comfortably speak over your headphone mix, it's too loud — and give your ears breaks.
Double-Tracking: The Cheapest Big Production Trick
For strummed rhythm parts, record the part twice — two real performances, not a copied track — and pan one left and one right. The tiny natural timing and tuning differences between takes create width and thickness that no effect reproduces convincingly. A duplicated-and-panned single take collapses back to mono; two honest takes don't.
Variations worth trying:
- Play the second pass with a capo at a different position using different chord shapes. Same harmony, different voicing, instant richness.
- Use a different pick (or fingers) on the second pass for textural contrast.
- Keep fingerpicked or melodic lead parts mono and centered — double-tracking smears their detail.
Troubleshooting the Usual Failures
- Boomy, muddy low end: mic is aimed at or near the soundhole, or too close (proximity effect). Re-aim at the neck join and back off a few inches before reaching for EQ.
- Thin and clacky: mic is too far up the neck or the pick is very thin. Slide toward the body; try a heavier pick.
- Boxy, ringing room sound: small untreated room, mic too far away. Move closer, add soft furnishings, change rooms.
- String squeak on shifts: partly technique (lift slightly on position changes), partly strings — coated or flat-wound-feel strings squeak less. Some squeak is normal and human; total silence sounds edited.
- Uneven volume between sections: that's the player, not the gear. Practice the dynamic shape, or record sections separately. Don't plan to "fix it with compression" — compression evens levels but also brings the room up.
- Ticking in quiet passages: click bleed from headphones. Lower the click, use better-sealed headphones, or switch the click to a lower-bleed sound.
A Repeatable Session Routine
- Fresh-ish strings, tuned; buzz checked.
- Pick the most furnished room; sit away from walls; clap test.
- Cardioid mic at the 12th fret, 6–12 inches, angled slightly toward the body.
- Record 20-second tests at two or three positions; compare and commit.
- Set gain so peaks land around -12 to -6 dBFS.
- Closed-back headphones, moderate volume, click set low.
- Record takes; retune every couple of takes; stay in one seated position.
- If doubling, perform the part again — never copy-paste.
