Start With the Signal Chain, Not the Shopping List
Every guitar recording, from a bedroom demo to an album track, travels the same basic path: the guitar makes a signal, something converts that signal to digital audio, and software captures it. That path is called the signal chain, and once you understand it, every gear decision becomes obvious instead of overwhelming.
For home recording, the chain almost always looks like this:
Guitar → audio interface → computer running a DAW
A DAW (digital audio workstation) is the recording software — the free one bundled with your interface or operating system is genuinely enough to start. The audio interface is the box that converts your guitar's analog signal into digital audio and back again. It replaces the sound card built into your computer, which was designed for video calls, not instruments.
That's the whole architecture. Electric or acoustic, mic or no mic, everything below is a variation on that one chain. If you're stuck deciding what to buy, solve for the chain, not for a wishlist.
What You Actually Need
Here's the honest minimum, and it's shorter than most gear guides admit:
- An audio interface with at least one instrument input (often labeled "Hi-Z" or "Inst"). Entry-level 2-input interfaces are the standard starting point, and the differences between current models at that tier are small. What matters is covered in our guide to choosing your first audio interface.
- A DAW. Free options ship with most interfaces and operating systems. You will not outgrow a free DAW before you've recorded fifty songs.
- Closed-back headphones. Closed-back means the ear cups seal around your ears, so the backing track doesn't leak into a microphone while you record. Any reasonably flat closed-back pair works.
- One cable — a standard instrument cable from guitar to interface.
That records electric guitar, full stop. Add one microphone and a stand if you want to record acoustic guitar or a real amplifier, and a pop-free, quiet-ish room helps more than any of it.
What you don't need yet: studio monitors, a mic collection, a rack of preamps, acoustic panels, or a pedalboard of any particular pedigree. All of those have their place eventually. None of them are why beginner recordings sound bad. Levels, placement, and performance are — and those are free.
The Instrument Input Matters
One technical detail worth knowing: an electric guitar's pickup outputs a weak, high-impedance signal. Impedance is, loosely, how much the signal resists being loaded down by whatever it's plugged into. Plug a guitar into an input designed for microphones or line-level gear and you get a dull, lifeless tone — not subtly, obviously. The "Hi-Z" or "instrument" input on an interface is designed for this signal. Use it. If your interface has a button labeled Inst, press it when a guitar is plugged in directly.
Set Your Levels Before You Play a Note
The single most common beginner mistake is recording too hot — pushing the input level so high the signal clips, which in digital audio means hard, unfixable distortion. The second most common mistake is overcorrecting and recording so quietly that noise becomes a problem later.
The fix is simple and permanent:
- Play the loudest part of the song — the hardest strum, the biggest chord — while watching the input meter in your DAW or on the interface.
- Set the interface's gain knob so those loudest peaks land roughly between −18 and −10 dBFS (decibels relative to digital full scale, where 0 is clipping). In practice: peaks around the middle to upper-middle of the meter, never touching the red.
- Leave it alone.
That looks quiet on the meter, and that's fine. Modern recording is 24-bit, which gives you enormous headroom — the space between your signal and the clipping point. You can turn a clean, conservative recording up later with zero penalty. You cannot un-clip a distorted one.

Recording Electric Guitar: Two Roads
Electric guitar gives you a genuine fork in the road, and it's worth understanding both branches before picking one.
Option 1: Direct (DI) With Amp Simulation
DI stands for direct injection — plugging the guitar straight into the interface's instrument input with no amp involved. The raw DI signal sounds thin and clacky on its own; that's expected, because an electric guitar was never meant to be heard without an amp and speaker shaping it. The amp's job is then done in software by an amp simulator (amp sim): a plugin that models the preamp distortion, power amp behavior, and speaker cabinet of real rigs.
This is how a large share of modern records get their guitar tones, including plenty you'd swear were miked amps. The advantages are hard to argue with at home:
- Silent recording. Full high-gain tone at 2 a.m. through headphones.
- Total revisability. The tone isn't printed. Decide next week that the part needs less gain or a different virtual cabinet, and you just change the plugin.
- No room, no mic, no placement skill required. The weakest links in most home recordings are simply removed from the chain.
- Consistency. Every take through the same settings sounds the same, which makes doubling and punch-ins seamless.
The honest downsides: playing feel through a sim depends on low latency (more on that below), and dialing a sim takes taste — the presets that sound impressive solo are usually far too gained-up and scooped to sit in a mix. Start with less distortion than feels fun. It will sound bigger in the track.
Option 2: Miking a Real Amp
The traditional method: put a microphone in front of the amp's speaker and record what the mic hears. The workhorse approach is a basic dynamic mic — the rugged, inexpensive type designed for loud sources — placed an inch or two from the speaker grille, aimed somewhere between the center and the edge of the speaker cone. Toward the center is brighter and more aggressive; toward the edge is warmer and darker. Small moves make big changes; an inch of mic movement does more than most EQ decisions.
Miking wins on feel. The amp pushes air, the guitar responds, and if you love your amp's sound, the recording captures your rig rather than a model of someone else's. The costs are the obvious ones: volume your household and neighbors must tolerate, a room that colors the sound whether you like it or not, and placement skill that only develops with practice.
Which road is better is genuinely contested among engineers, and the honest answer is that both produce professional results and the differences shrink every year. Do This Either Way: Keep a DI Safety Track
If your interface allows it — and most 2-input interfaces do — record the clean DI signal on its own track even when you're miking an amp or committing to a sim tone. Many interfaces and DAWs make this trivial with a split or a second input. That clean track lets you reamp later: send the dry performance back through a different amp or sim without replaying the part. It costs nothing at record time and has saved more mixes than any plugin ever made.
Recording Acoustic Guitar: The Mic Has to Move
Acoustic guitar is a different problem. There's no DI shortcut to a great sound — the pickup systems built into acoustic guitars are designed for live stages and sound noticeably quacky and artificial in a recording. For a natural recorded acoustic tone, a microphone in the right place is the whole game.
The consensus starting position, and it's consensus for a reason:
- Mic type: a condenser mic — the more sensitive, detail-oriented type that needs phantom power (the 48V button on your interface). A small-diaphragm condenser is the classic choice, but any decent condenser works, and a dynamic mic will do in a pinch with the mic placed closer.
- Position: aim the mic at the point where the neck meets the body, around the 12th–14th fret, from about 6–12 inches away.
- Not the soundhole. Pointing a mic directly at the soundhole is the intuitive move and the wrong one — the soundhole is where the boomy low-end resonance of the body dumps out, and recordings made there sound bloated and woofy.
From that starting point, move the mic while listening on headphones: toward the body for warmth, toward the neck for articulation and string detail, farther away for more air and more room sound. Your ears on headphones, moving the mic in real time, will find a good spot faster than any diagram.
Room sound matters here in a way it doesn't for DI electric. A mic hears everything — the refrigerator, the reflections off your desk, the boxy midrange of a small untreated room. Recording closer to the guitar reduces the room's contribution; so does recording in the biggest, most furnished space you have rather than a bare-walled bedroom. Latency: The Delay That Ruins Takes
Latency is the delay between playing a note and hearing it back through the computer — the round trip through conversion, software, and back. A few milliseconds is imperceptible. Past roughly ten milliseconds it starts to feel like the guitar is fighting you, and your timing quietly falls apart.
Two controls fix it:
- Buffer size. In your DAW's audio settings, the buffer is how much audio the computer processes at once. Smaller buffer, lower latency, more CPU strain. Track at a small buffer (64 or 128 samples is typical); raise it later when mixing, when latency no longer matters.
- Direct monitoring. Most interfaces have a direct monitor knob or button that routes the input straight to your headphones before it reaches the computer — zero perceptible latency, always. The trade-off: you hear your dry, unprocessed signal, which matters for sim-based electric tones where you want to hear the amp sound while playing. For acoustic work, direct monitoring is usually the easy answer.
A note on headphone levels while we're here: tracking sessions run long, and it's easy to creep the volume up take after take. Sustained loud listening — commonly cited around 85 dB and up for extended periods — causes permanent hearing damage, and engineers' ears are their entire toolkit. Set your headphone level so you could comfortably hold a conversation over it, and take breaks. Your future mixes depend on the ears you keep.
The Part Gear Can't Fix: The Performance
Here is the uncomfortable truth every experienced engineer eventually tells a beginner: a great performance through modest gear sounds better than a sloppy one through anything. The following habits improve recordings more than any purchase.
Tune before every take. Not every session — every take. Guitars drift, and slightly-out-of-tune doubled parts create a sour chorusing effect no plugin removes.
Put on fresh-ish strings. Dead strings sound dull on recordings in a way they don't in the room. You don't need day-one brightness, but months-old strings are audible.
Play to a click or drum loop. Timing inconsistencies that feel fine live become glaring on repeat listens. A simple drum loop feels more musical to play against than a bare metronome, and either beats neither.
Record more takes than feels necessary, then comp. Comping — assembling one master take from the best sections of several — is standard professional practice, not cheating. Three to five committed full takes usually beat twenty fragments punched in note by note, because full takes preserve momentum and phrasing.
Double-track rhythm parts. Recording the same rhythm part twice and panning one take left, one right, is the oldest trick in rock production and still the best. Two real performances, not a copy-pasted duplicate — the tiny differences between takes are what create the width.
Mind your mechanics. Pick attack, string muting, and fret-hand noise are all magnified by recording. If a take sounds messy, the fastest fix is usually playing it cleaner, not processing it harder.
Common Problems, Ranked by Likelihood
- Hum and buzz. Single-coil pickups pick up interference from screens and dimmers. Rotate your seating position, turn off nearby monitors mid-take, and keep the guitar's volume at full while tracking.
- Clipped takes. You set gain for normal playing, then dug in during the real take. Set levels against your hardest playing, not your soundcheck politeness.
- Harsh, fizzy sim tones. Too much gain and default presets. Cut the distortion by a third and try a different virtual cabinet before touching EQ — the cabinet choice is most of a sim's character.
- Boomy acoustic recordings. Mic aimed at the soundhole, or the room itself. Re-aim at the neck joint and get closer.
- Timing that feels off but looks fine. Latency during tracking. Lower the buffer or switch to direct monitoring and re-record; don't try to edit your way out.
Where to Go From Here
Record a whole song badly rather than one riff perfectly. Finishing exposes what actually needs work — usually levels, timing, and arrangement, and almost never the gear. Then finish another one. The interface and mic you own right now are better than what most classic records were tracked on relative to their era; the engineers just knew their chains cold.
